New Appointment Strengthens Focus on Mental Health in Construction

At a critical time within the sector when it comes to stress and anxiety, Mainmark UK is emphasising the importance of not just physical but mental health with the appointment of new Health and Safety Manager Phil Saxby.

Phil’s role involves leading the development of health and safety policies and procedures, and he also serves as a Mental Health First Aider. Phil is championing efforts to raise awareness, reduce the stigma around mental health in the workplace and make support a routine part of Mainmark’s safety culture.

Phil said: “I’m really pleased to be part of Mainmark and to support the business in building a strong, practical and positive safety culture. My colleagues can speak to me in confidence should they feel overwhelmed and I can help advise on the necessary professional support available.

“I’m keen to support open and early conversations around mental health, particularly within construction where stigma can still be a barrier to people asking for help. My aim is to make health, safety and wellbeing simple, visible and effective for everyone, while encouraging people to speak up early, look out for one another and feel confident asking for support when they need it.”

Phil will lead the continuous improvement of health and safety training, audits, inspections, risk management and compliance across the business. He also supports project teams with practical site safety controls, incident investigation, PQQs, accreditations and the ongoing development of Mainmark’s digital safety systems.

With a track record in civil engineering and groundworks, Phil has progressed from a hands-on groundworker role into health and safety advisory and management positions. His background gives him a practical understanding of site operations, risk control and the importance of building a positive safety culture.

Peter Bierton, CEO, at Mainmark said: “At Mainmark, we understand how important it is that our team feels supported and listened to when it comes to their mental health. We want to promote openness and a positive mental health culture at Mainmark. It is vital that we provide the necessary resources for us all to enjoy better mental health all year round.”

As part of Mental Health Awareness Week 2026, Phil has introduced mental health champions within the organisation, alongside a “toolbox talk”, a wellness walk and an informal coffee and chat session.

Mainmark Ground Engineering (UK) Ltd, established in 2016, is a subsidiary of the global Mainmark group - headquartered in Sydney, Australia, which has successfully grown its global presence over the last 20 years and now has 18 office locations worldwide.
